Ah I remember the first time my parents brought me home my first Guinea Pig. I was a young boy way back
then many many many moons ago. The excitement that came over my face was like me opening the biggest
Christmas present under the tree on Christmas morning. I should add that it was actually only Sept.
But it did not matter to me. I finally got a Guinea Pig. After me pleading and whining and stating how
responsible I was going to be to look after it my parents finally conceded and broke down and bought it
for me.
He was so small and cute and his little tongue licking my fingers I can remember that like it was
yesterday.
A cage was not a problem for us since we also owned a dog whom we often took with us on holidays so we
had a travel cage that we made my Guinea Pig's home.
Old Bootsy. The cutest little guy you have ever seen. Very well tempered never bite anyone and loved to
sit in your lap and let you pet him.
Being a first time Guinea Pig owner although I loved him dearly I had no idea what he needed to keep
him healthy or happy. I gave him what I thought he needed lots of fresh vegtables, kept his cage clean
etc. Unfortunately old Bootsy only lived to be about 3 years of age. At that time we took him to the
vet and the vet told us he was sick and they could operate on him.
The cost of the operation was not an issue for us at all. It was the stress and trauma of going through
such a procedure that we worried about.
So in the end we decided that he had suffered enough and to keep him around for our please was not
thinking of his feelings. So we did the humane thing and had him put to sleep.
This was the first time in my young life that I had experienced death of any form. I did understand
that he was sick and that I did not want him to be in any pain.
The tears from my young eyes did not stop for days. My parents were very kind to let me take him home
and bury him in our back yard. Since the thought of leaving him at the vets was something I refused to
let happen.
So I prepared a box and wrapped him in my favorite t shirt and put some fresh flowers in there and some
grass. Since he used to love to eat the grass from our back yard. I thought that if I wrapped him in my
t shirt that I would always be with him. And him with me.
My father dug a whole in our back yard and I gently put the box in it and we I asked them to leave
while I said my good byes.I then started to gently put the dirt over him with my little hands. Crying
non stop while I was doing so.
I then went into the garden and uprooted the young spruce that I had been given about a month earlier
and planted it on top.
Every day I went to water that little spruce to make sure it was happy and healthy. Because in my
little heart and mind it was no longer a spruce tree it was Bootsy that I was going to see
everyday.
Days went by then months and then years and that little spruce tree grew up to be a beautiful spruce
tree.
I later found out in my life there were some very important things that I could have done to not only
keep Bootsy happy but also healthy. To this day I think it would have done these things that I could
have added not only years to his life but happy healthy years.
So as a result in honor of Bootsy I decided to produce an instructional video on how to keep your
Guinea Pig happy and healthy and that is how Caring For Guinea Pigs came about. |

A note about the author. The author in his life time has owned numerous
different breeds of Guinea Pigs. He has learned the hard way to do things along with the correct way.
Do not make the same mistakes that I did. What I have done is I have documented all of my mistakes told
you the correct way and have instructed you on common mistakes made by Guinea Pig owners. I would
also like to mention the information contained in these videos is based on my own personal experience
along with information I have obtained through various reliable resources. If you are to search on the
internet one site will say one thing while another will say something completely opposite. The things
stated and discussed in the video set have worked for me personally. |
